Dred Scott Symposium

Washington University will host a symposium, March 1-3, marking the 150th anniversary of the landmark Dred Scott Decision. The symposium is free and open to the public. The keynote lecture will be presented by Michael A. Wolff, Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court, speaking on March 1st, at 4 p.m. in Graham Chapel.

Oxford Science Archives

Oxford Science Archives has been purchased and is now available at WU. This gives access to titles from v.1- through the volume for 1995 for each title. Click on the link above to see what titles are included. In most cases we have access to 1996+ due to active subscriptions on Danforth or Medical campuses, but in some cases we have no access beyond 1995.

Exhibition: Chinese New Year and Culture

Did you know that 2007 is the Year of the Pig?  Learn more about the zodiac and other customs and festivals of China in the Chinese New Year and Culture display in the lobby of Olin Library and Whispers Café.  The display runs from Friday, February 16th through Friday, March 16th. (Prepared by the Washington University Chinese Students and Scholars Association.)

A Black History Month exhibit, A History Lesson: St. Louis Then and Now, is currently on display in Olin Library’s lobby. It runs through February 28, 2007.

The Dred Scott Case and Its Legacy

The Dred Scott Case and Its Legacy: Race, Law, and the Struggle for Equality: Dred and Harriet Scott's historic petitions, filed in pursuit of their freedom from slavery, will be on display Saturday, March 3, 2007, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room, Olin Library, Level 1, on the campus of Washington University. These documents are on loan from the Missouri State Archives, and will be in Special Collections only for the March 3rd event. A reception will be held concurrently, in the Ginkgo Reading Room, adjacent to Special Collections. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Exhibition: Safer Sex Awareness Week

The Student Health Advisory Committee mounted an informational display for Safer Sex Awareness Week. The display runs from February 9-16, 2007 and is located in Olin Library's Whispers Cafe.

Keesing's World News Archive is the online version of Keesing's record of world events.  Note that while many years are searchable, our subscription only includes full-text of the articles from 1987 to present. More info.

Lecture: Christopher Buckley, Feb. 21

Political satirist Christopher Buckley will be the Assembly Series speaker on Wednesday, February 21st, at 11 a.m. in Graham Chapel. His lecture is entitled "Thank You for Smoking: A Conversation with Christopher Buckley." The recent movie Thank You for Smoking is based on Buckley’s novel of the same name. Washington University Libraries are co-sponsoring this lecture, thanks to an endowment from WU alumnus Carl Neureuther.

New Database: John Milton Bibliography

The Libraries have acquired access to the John Milton Bibliography, which brings together "all manuscripts and editions of John Milton's works and all studies and critical statements concerning his life and works, all allusions and quotations, and all significant imitations during the years 1624-1799."
