Lightning Learning

The third Lightning Learning session is going on now with three attendees--one student and Lori and Sylvia from the Social Work Library! So, library staff, feel free to come to these sessions. Friday's session at 12:15 is on Google Scholar.

This week

This week, I'm:

  • planning a Firefox demo for the Reference Unit
  • serving on my first library search committee (for the Film and Media Digital Archivist)
  • thinking about whether mini-workshops would work on our campus
  • brainstorming with others about a staff bulletin board wiki
  • working at the Reference Desk
  • getting a flu shot
  • delivering a presentation on social software in libraries for Kirkwood Public Library's In Service Day

...and a few other things I don't remember just at the moment.

Writing 1

For the past week and a half, this Web Services Librarian has been doing all Writing 1, all the time. It's really one of my favorite parts of the job, but it is a bit intense.

Next week, I'm going to MLA. Let me know if there's a session that you would like for me to attend or a vendor that you would like for me to visit. Here's the conference schedule (pdf).

IM workshop

The IM workshop today was a madhouse as everyone tried to download Trillian and set up accounts on three different services, all at once but at different speeds depending on the problems they encountered. I didn't present at all, just roved around to try to keep people going through the process.

For those who missed the fun, the handouts are on StaffWiki (password required):

There's sure to be plenty of questions when people work on this in their own offices, so give me a call or email--or if you get far enough, IM me! My contact info is on the bottom of the Homework Handout.

I've already had a request to do another workshop--maybe in late September. We'll have to schedule it around Writing 1 Sessions, but it should be doable.

Blog in the wiki

I just made a blog (wiki account required) for Rina to use while she's at Immersion in the wiki. It looks like it will work pretty well for that purpose. It was very quick and easy to set up, but it looks like the rest of the wiki, so not, at the moment, a good tool for our public blogs.

Tech Changes '06

The Printing web site, aka Technology Changes '06, is up. We rushed to get the content up before the initial letters from the Dean go out. So it's content-rich but design-poor. I'm open to suggestions for improvement!
