UT Summer Statistics Institute - May 21 – May 24, 2012

The Division of Statistics + Scientific Computation at The University of Texas at Austin will be hosting the University’s fifth annual UT Summer Statistics Institute on the UT Austin campus from May 21 – May 24, 2012.  Short courses are offered at all levels including introductory statistics, software, and statistical methods and applications. We are offering a Bayesian Statistics for Social Sciences course, as well as many other courses that would be of interest to the members of your political methodology list.

The three main purposes of the SSI are:

•   To provide participants with access to new statistical knowledge and skills

•   To give participants hands-on experience with data analysis

•   To prepare participants to interpret studies employing statistical methods.

APA Publication Manual Replacements

"The cumulative outrage finally carried the day. The association has just announced that it will "recycle" remaining soft cover copies of the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the APA. Anyone who gets in touch with the association between November 2 and December 15 and asks for a replacement will receive a free copy of the emended second printing, according to Rhea Faberman, Director of Communications. (She recommends that people contact the APA's service center to submit those requests.)"

Steps you need to take:
1) You call the center between Nov. 2 - Dec. 15.
2) They send you a link to an online form and mailing label.
3) You box up your book and mail it back for free.
4) They send you a replacement.

APA finalizes its no-fee green policy

The American Psychological Association has finalized its self-archiving policy after a two-month re-examination.  Read more on the APA's site about its policy which no longer includes the hefty $2,500 deposit fee. Document Deposit Procedures for APA Journals

Revised NIH Public Access Policy

The NIH recently issued guidelines on the revised NIH Public Access Policy. The revised NIH Public Access Policy stipulates that NIH-funded investigators are required to submit their final, peer reviewed manuscript to PubMed Central (PMC) within 12 months of publication. This policy applies to NIH-funded manuscripts accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008. Investigators who are currently preparing NIH-funded manuscripts scheduled to be accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008 will need to ensure that they have retained the right from publishers to comply with the NIH policy.
