Do you know about the Customized Copyright Addendum generator available to all WU authors?

The Washington University Copyright Addendum form will generate a customized PDF that authors can attach to a journal publisher’s copyright form to retain specific rights that are not expressly stated by the publisher. Any combination of these rights may be selected. Please note that the WU Addendum allows authors to retain rights to the peer-reviewed manuscript version; not the final published article. The peer-reviewed manuscript version reflects all the changes made as a result of the peer review process.

WU authors are NOT required to use the WU Addendum. It is a tool for authors to use if they wish to retain rights that are not expressly stated in journal publisher’s copyright form. For more information on rights for authors please see Authors and Copyright.

Research Paper: Information Literacy from the Trenches

Information Literacy from the Trenches: How Do Humanities and Social Science Majors Conduct Academic Research?

This article examines the ways in which students majoring in humanities and social sciences conceptualize and operationalize course-related research. Findings are presented from an information-seeking behavior study with data collected from student discussion groups, a student survey, and a content analysis of professors’ research assignment handouts. Results indicate that students first use course readings and library resources for academic research and then rely on public Internet sites later in their research process. Students adopt a hybrid approach to course-related research. A majority of students in this study leveraged both human and computer-mediated resources to compensate for their lack of information literacy. In particular, students faced problems with determining information needs for assignments, selecting and critically evaluating resources, and gauging professors’ expectations for quality research.

The Scientific Council of the European Research Council has released its Guidelines for Open Access. Although the document is dated December 17, 2007, it was put online January 10, 2008.

The Changing Information Services Needs of Faculty

In the summer and fall of 2006, Ithaka (http://www.Ithaka.org) commissioned an outside research firm, Odyssey, to conduct surveys of the attitudes and perceptions of academic collection development librarians and faculty toward the transition to an increasingly electronic environment. These studies received 4,100 and 350 responses, respectively, and were cosponsored by JSTOR and Portico and in part by Aluka and NITLE. The studies build on similar faculty studies conducted in 2000 and 2003; by examining the librarians' perspective as well, we can gain a fairly balanced perspective of the dynamic environment. Considered together, the findings suggest the need for libraries to take leadership in helping academia's transition to the new environment.
