Federal Open Access Policy

White House Delivers New Open-Access Policy That Has Activists Cheering - The Obama administration says federally financed research should be made freely available within 12 months of publication in a peer-reviewed journal. From John P. Holdren, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy: "I have issued a memorandum today to Federal agencies that directs those with more than $100 million in research and development expenditures to develop plans to make the results of federally-funded research publicly available free of charge within 12 months after original publication."

Open Scholarship

Undergraduate honors students can now publish their original research in the Washington University Libraries Open Scholarship repository.  The repository is a service of the Libraries to provide free access to the scholarly output of the university.  More information about the repository is available on this About page. 

Open Scholarship already contains several senior honors projects.  You can find examples listed under Student Publications in two folders – Undergraduate Theses–Restricted and Undergraduate Theses–Unrestricted.  Find out more about submission guidelines, policies, forms and the necessity for the two distinct areas at this site: http://libguides.wustl.edu/undergrad_open_schol.  

Consider encouraging your students to submit their honors theses to this site in order to give them a stable URL to include on future resumes and so that the talent of our department can be showcased either on campus or worldwide.

Newly Published Einstein Writings

For physicists trying to make sense of quantum mechanics, Albert Einstein's thinking remains highly relevant. "This guy saw more deeply and more quickly into the problems that plague us today," one quantum physicist told me. The latest volume of the Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, which contains Einstein's publications, draft papers, letters, and scribblings from January 1922 through March 1923, shows that his deep concerns with the quantum predated his well-known duels with Niels Bohr and played a major role in shaping the emerging theory. Many of these writings have not been made public before.
