The Astronomy Center

This website is a must-visit for anyone involved in teaching college-level astronomy. The Astronomy Center is sponsored by the American Astronomical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the National Science Foundation, among other distinguished organizations. Visitors can get started by looking over the Recent Additions area, which in the past has included features on the phases of the moon, interactive activities related to fossil stars, and a telescope primer for educators. Visitors can use the Browse By Topic area to find specific materials on 13 subjects, including galaxies, the solar system, and the Milky Way. Also, visitors can browse by document type, where the headings include Simulations, Projects, and Labs. The Cosmic Time and Distance includes activities that will challenge students to explore the concepts of parallax and aberration of light as they apply to astronomy.

Nonprofit Textbook Movement

As an alternative to high priced textbooks, OpenStax College offers free online textbooks which can be printed for the cost of printing or accessed as pdfs or epubs. There is a good blog post about this at Discover Magazine.

SCOAP3 News

On June 1, SCOAP³ (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) announced that it has issued its Invitation to Tender to the leading publishers of high-quality peer-reviewed journals carrying content in the field of High-Energy Physics, who had previously agreed to the key SCOAP3 principles in a qualifying market survey.

ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is an initiative to give every scientific author a unique identifier to help distinguish between those with similar names. There's a good article about it in a recent issue of Nature - Scientists: Your Number is Up.
