PhysMath Central

PMC Physics A and PMC Physics B will integrate into a new initiative of the European Physical Journal (EPJ), EPJ.Open. PMC Biophysics has now transferred to the BMC series of open access journals published by BioMed Central and has been re-launched as BMC Biophysics. Although PhysMath Central has now been closed, all content previously published in PMC Physics A, PMC Physics B and PMC Biophysics will remain permanently available online, archived on the specific journal websites.

Microsoft Academic Search

Microsoft Academic Search is a free academic search engine developed by Microsoft Research, which also serves as a test-bed for many research ideas in Data Mining, Named Entity Extraction and Disambiguation, Data Visualization, etc. As a research prototype, the coverage of MAS is still very limited in certain domains. Microsoft Academic Search provides many innovative ways to explore academic publications, authors, conferences, journals, organizations and keywords, connecting millions of scholars, students, librarians, and other users. This could be a useful resource for tracking citation counts in the future.

Physics to go videos

Physics can be taught in a number of ways, and these short videos are a nice way to hook students into the discipline. These particular videos were created by the Physics in Society team at the Institute of Physics, and their goal is "to inspire people of all ages about physics." There are nineteen videos here, and each one features a demonstration, along with information about the required ingredients or materials and instructions for performing each demonstration in front of a class or with others. Titles of the videos include "Erupting Fizz", "Magical Match", "Amazing Marshmallows", and "Cartesian Diver". The nice thing about these demonstrations is that they are easy to perform, and they require a minimum of materials.

Enhanced HTML

IOP Publishing has rolled out an article evolution program designed to improve the online delivery of research articles, enabling readers to interact with research in new ways. The first release provides an enhanced HTML view for all newly published articles in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical and Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. This enhanced view gives researchers the ability to zoom in and out of images, making it easier to look at complex details and export them into presentations. Video abstracts are now embedded within the HTML article and the option to view mathematics using MathJax technology is also now available. All other IOP-owned journals and selected partner titles will adopt the new enhanced article view and features for their 2012 volumes.
