Manage your Citations w/ RefWorks--1-hr. workshops-9/24 & 10/2

Brian will be offering one-hour workshops to get you started with using RefWorks, a citation manager. Remember,  RefWorks is available on- and off-campus.

What can you do with RefWorks?

• easily and quickly import citations from databases and catalogs
• manage citations in your personal database
• create bibliographies in citation styles (MLA, APA)
• cite as you write your articles and papers

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online grows and new resources

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online, which provides bilingual dictionaries for Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, continues to grow with over 850 words added to the French, German, and Italian sections. See some notable examples below:

German
Kostenschub: price increases, cost inflation
nachbessern: to amend, patch up (colloquial)
Steuererleichterung: tax relief
Billigflieger: budget airline
havarieren: to go badly wrong (figurative)

French
podcaster: to podcast
réseautage social: social networking

With Oxford Language Dictionaries Online, you can search as well as browse through dictionary entries. Entries include idiomatic expressions. You can also print, email, cite, or directly link to entries.

Oxford also offers a number of teaching and language resources for all languages. Some new resources include: "Living in France" , "Varieties of Present-day Spanish" and "Writing Effectively in English" (for Spanish speakers).

WorldCat.org and WorldCat (First Search)

WorldCat.org and WorldCat using FirstSearch are the two interfaces for searching WorldCat, the international catalog of library resources. Although similar, there are some differences to be aware of.

 WorldCat.org  

• Available to anyone, anywhere. Don't need to use proxy.
• GetIt! and ILLiad under "Services from Washington University Libraries"--NO red or green icons
• Multiple search options and limits.
• Can use search box from Libraries' website. More info.
• Can make lists of items for yourself.
• Can specify your favorite libraries so they'll appear at the top. 
• Can export citations into RefWorks and Endnote

   WorldCat using FirstSearch

• Only available to WU users. Off-campus, need to go through the proxy server.
• For ILLiad (ILL)-- look for the red-colored icon.
• More detailed search options.
• Can save, email, print citations.
• Can export citations into RefWorks and Endnote.

Amsterdamer Beiträge zur n. Germanistik--Increased Access

We've recently re-cataloged individual issues of the Amsterdamer Beitrage zur neueren Germanistik (0304-6257) to provide greater access. You can now search in the Catalog under the specific title of each issue. Below are some recents issues. Also note, we have online access to Bd. 45 (1999) to the present.

Google Book & Bayerische Staatsbibliothek--access to texts

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has recently entered into an agreement with Google to add its holdings to the Google Book Project. Online access to German literature will jump by leaps and bounds. Full announcement.

With Google Book Search, you can search the full-text of millions of books. And depending on copyright, either snipets  or the entire book is viewable and downloadable. From the other partnering libraries, there already is a growing body of German Studies material in English and German.

Some things to keep in mind about Google Book Search

• Many English translations of German works already available.
• Books with full text have table of contents links for easy navigation.
• You can search within a single book.
• You can link back to check the WU library catalog. Look for the "Find in a library" icon on the bottom right. 
• Use Advanced Book Search -- so you can search specifically by TITLE and AUTHOR.
• Searching the WU library catalog is still better, since there are more search options, such as language, date, and subject.
• Accuracy when searching materials in Fraktur is problematic.

Spotlight--IBZ-Online

IBZ Online is the online version of the Intenationale Bibliographie der Zeitschriftenliteratur (a.k.a. International Bibliography of Periodical Literature).

Description: IBZ, also known as "The Dietrich", has been published since 1896 and is an international and interdisciplinary bibliography of academic periodical literature mainly from the Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts. It cover 1983 to the present. And IBZ is updated on a monthly basis.

Coverage is international in scope but in some cases has better coverage for European publications than North American-oriented databases. Great resource if you're researching and interdisciplinary topic or if you want to concentrate more on publications outside North America.

IBZ Online has both an English and German search interface. We’re linked directly to the English one.

Tips with using IBZ

1.       Use Advanced Search where you can limit by year and language; and sort by relevance.

2.   You can use both German and English terms but many entries have only German subject terms.

3.   Umlauts need to be used or the "ae", "oe", "ue" alternatives. Both "ss" and "ß" work.

4.       Help documentation available (tab in upper right)

5.       To interlibrary loan something you find in IBZ, you need to do it through ILLiad. Also, check to see whether we have the item available online or in print first.

6.   IBZ is not searchable through FindIt!. You need to search directly in IBZ Online
