Schirmer Encyclopedia of Film (2007)--NEW E-BOOK

The Libraries have subscribed to the e-book Schirmer Encyclopedia of Film (2007) which provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to film and film studies, covering such aspects as production, national traditions, studios, genres, critical theory and film history.

Longer articles includes table of contents with links to the sections. You can print, email, download, and bookmark entries. There's also a citation generator. Here's an example: the article on Italian film

4 new Oxford Univ. Press E-BOOK titles

The Libraries are converting many print reference titles to electronic book subscriptions. Below is a listing of four titles relevant to literary and cultural studies. All of these can also be found in the Library Catalog.

All of these allow browsing, searching, and easy emailing/printing of entries.

British Humanities Index--NEW DATABASE

The Libraries have subscribed to British Humanities Index which covers a wide range of arts and humanities subjects, Coverage also includes foreign literature. Articles are from journals and weekly magazines published in the United Kingdom and other English speaking countries. More info.

New E-Book--Pop Culture Germany!

The Libraries have begun to purchase electronic books from a new vendor, Ebrary. One of the first titles we bought is Pop culture Germany! : media, arts, and lifestyle / Catherine C. Fraser, Dierk O. Hoffmann, 2006.

After accessing your first Ebrary book, you'll need to download the Ebrary Reader. This is a ONE-TIME install and will take only SECONDS to install. After that, you'll be set to read the above book and any other eBrary electronic books. All library computers will have the Ebrary Reader installed.

With Ebrary you can:

  • Take notes and save for later.
  • Highlight passages and save for later.
  • Browse using Table of Contents
  • Cross-search across all Ebrary titles.

A gateway to websites on nature, status and development of German dialects, including German in non-German speaking countries, published by the University of Portsmouth. Also include a wider range of languages such as Dutch; Frisian; Letzeburgish; Sorbian; Afrikaans; Yiddish. The links refer to online text resources and sound files.

EUFeeds--Browse over 300 European newspapers

EUFeeds is a special-purpose RSS aggregator for European newspapers that provides access to more than 300 papers. Provided by the European Journalism Centre in the Netherlands, this site lets you quickly browse the print media.  It is updated every 20 minutes. 

From the main site: http://www.eufeeds.eu/ , click on the country's flag to go to the newspapers from that Country. Note, Switzerland is not included.

Literary Encyclopedia--ONLINE

WU Libraries have subscribed to Literary Encyclopedia, a scholarly-owned, peer-reviewed encylopedia of literature which is constantly being  updated with new content.

Literary Encyclopedia provides:

  • Nearly 4700 profiles of authors, works and topics (literary, philosophical, historical) written in the last seven years by upwards of 1800 university experts.
  • Allows you to group articles in bookshelves for future use.
  • Can provide direct links to articles--great to refer students to.

Oxford Companion to German Literature--ACCESS RESTORED

Our access to the Oxford Companion to German Literature through the Oxford Reference Online database has been reactivated. Note, only five users can use this database at a time, please LOGOFF when finished.

The Oxford Companion to German Literature:

  • Can browse entries or search by keyword
  • Covers literature from German-speaking contries from 8th century to mid-1990s.
  • Entries cover authors and their major works as well as historical, intellectural and cultural periods.
