Changes in copyright in Germany

Copyright laws are changing in Germany. Unfortunately it looks at those access to materials in electronic format will be even more restrictive in German libraries.

Also these changes may directly affect you if you published works in Germany (i.e. from a German publisher) before 1995. From my understanding, you have one year to declare that you want to retain rights to distribute your work online (e.g. in the form of an e-book). If you don't, this right will stay with the publisher. And this right pertains to German and non-German authors alike.

Klaus Graf on the H-Soz-u-Kult listserv discusses this in detail and also provides sample letters one can use to send to publishers.

NOTE: I'm not a lawyer and this does not constitute legal advice. Nor do I purport to be an expert translator of German legalese.

***Changes in Off-Campus Access to Library Resources***

In part from feedback on the library survey this past Spring, we've changed the way we provide access to library resources from off-campus to make it easier for everyone. You'll no longer need to configure your browser. Instead, you'll login to the proxy server once using your WU ID number and the password you've set up to logon to library computers. Then you simply go to the resource of your choice.

  • Full announcement
  • Instructions (including how to delete browser settings for the old proxy system)
  • Proxy logon page (NOTE: this can be bookmarked for quick access)
  • For some databases, you may be able to bookmark directly to the resource. One example is the BDSL.
  • NOTE: if you clicked on a link to http://libproxy.wustl.edu (or used a bookmark to it), you'll start at the Library homepage. But if you clicked on a link to a database, you'll be connected to that resource. As long as you follow links from there your connection will be proxied. The hostname (first part of the URL) in your browser's address bar will contain '.libproxy.wustl.edu.'

Feel free to contact me with questions. Brian (bvetruba@wustl.edu ; 935-4824 ; IM: wulibgerman)

***ILLiad logon and password changes***

We are changing the way you login to the ILLiad interlibrary loan system. Instead of using your current username and password, you will instead need to use your University ID number and the password you use to logon to library computers.

If you have never set this password, go to https://lansing.wulib.wustl.edu/password-change.asp to change it. The temporary password (which must be changed at the first use) is the first 2 letters of your last name (first letter capitalized and second in lower case) followed by your University ID. For Faculty and Staff, your University ID is your six-digit employee number.

Example: The temporary password for John Doe with University ID 123456 would be Do123456.

These changes will occur August 24 - August 29, 2007. Your current username and password will continue to work until the changes are completed. If you have any questions or encounter any problems, please contact Brian (bvetruba@wustl.edu , 935-4824); Nada Vaughn, ILL Supervisor at 935-4087; or the Olin Library Help Desk at 935-5410.

Libraries' Increase in German Literature titles

Recently, we modified our profile with our main vendor in Germany to increase the number of primary and secondary titles in German literature sent to us. Specifically, we're increasing titles in Early Modern through 19th century.

Overall, the Libraries have also increased the book budget for English-language items in all subject areas. So, you'll also see an increase in the number of titles of German literary criticism titles in English.

These changes are in response to feedback you provided us during the focus groups and interviews we conducted last year.
