Our vendor will be holding training sessions for Eighteen Century Collections Online (ECCO) for faculty, students, and staff. If interested, please attend a session.

Info on Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) :

ECCO contains the full-text of nearly 150,000 English-language titles and editions published between 1701 and 1800, with full-text searching of more than 33 million pages of material; in essence, every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom, along with thousands of important works from the Americas.

Allows you to browse authors and works as well as search within a particular work. 

Of particular note for Germanists:

• English translations of notable German-language authors/scholars (among them Moritz, Christian Wolff, Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Klopstock)
• Reference works of the time (language dictionaries, encyclopedia, history of Europe)
• travel literature

Online Access to full-text of German Dissertations

The Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB) and other institutions have made a number of dissertations and other academic publications on a wide variety of subjects FREELY AVAILABLE.

The DNB Catalog has more than 44,000 dissertations and Habilitationsschriften from 90 German universities which are freely available. To search exclusively for online dissertations available from the DNB:

• Go to "Erweiterte Suche" in the DNB catalog
• Deselect all the "Materialart" EXCEPT "Online-Ressourcen". These options are toward the bottom.
• Select "Hochschulschriften [hss]" in one of the search pull down menus. And if you want to limit to just dissertations, enter "diss" in the search box.
• Enter search keywords in other search boxes. Broad terms seem to bring out the best results.
• Once in a record, click on "URL" or "persistent identifier" to access full-text. You may need to hunt for the "pdf" icon on some.
• Additional tips are noted in the DNB Catalog's "Hilfe" (Help documentation).
• These instructions in German.

German Baroque Microfilm--REVISED

68 titles from the Yale University and Harold Jantz's German Baroque literature collections are now available on microfilm. The reels are located in the microfilm cabinets outside the ARC on Level A and filed under GERMAN BAROQUE.

These include many works by Johannes Praetorius (1630-1680). Some topics include witchcraft, demonology, comets, the Devil, and the Faust legend.

Dictonary portal which allows cross-searching of eleven German dictionaries at once. Besides Deutsches Wörterbuch von Jakob und Wilhelm Grimm, includes Goethe Wörterbuch, all of the Middle High German dictionaries, Rheinisches Wörterbuch, and others. Project created by Uni Trier.
