British Humanities Index

We now have on-line access to the British Humanities Index.  Below is a brief description:

'An international abstracting and indexing tool for research in the humanities, BHI indexes over 370 internationally respected humanities journals and weekly magazines published in the UK and other English speaking countries, as well as quality newspapers published in the UK. Regular monthly updates ensure subscribers can retrieve the latest material on a wide range of arts and humanities subjects, aided by a completely interactive thesaurus and the capability to link to electronic fulltext of many journal articles.' (from BHI Factsheet)

New Off-Campus Access Service

Using subscription databases off-campus will be much easier with the Libraries' new proxy service. You'll be asked to log in once using your WU ID number and the password you use to log on to the public computers in the Libraries. Then, you will in most cases be able to navigate freely among the various databases and journal packages (there are some exceptions). Additional information is here; please let us know if you encounter any problems.

Logging on to the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan System

All library patrons who have an ILLiad interlibrary loan account will be receiving an email about a change in the log on procedure. Instead of using your current username and password, you'll use your university ID number and the password you use to log on to library computers. This change will occur 8/24-8/29. If you have questions or encounter problems, contact Nada Vaughn at 935-4087 or the Olin Library Help Desk at 935-5410.

ArticleReach Direct for Getting Articles Quickly

The Libraries have launched a new unmediated delivery service for requesting journal articles. As usual, for immediate access, check to see if the Libraries provide the full text in paper or electronic format via the familiar Get it! retrieval options. But if not, follow the ArticleReach Direct link and click through the forms. You'll receive an email message when the article is ready, usually 2-3 days, and you'll log in to My Catalog to retrieve it. More information about the service is here.

The Machine is Us/ing Us

I just came across Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us (final version), posted to the TEI listserv. In this thought-provoking video Michael Wesch, Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University, demonstrates how the creation, organization, and distribution of data on the web is evolving and prompting us to "rethink a few things."

Here at WU, on-going efforts in digital scholarship and humanities computing are described at the Washington University Digital Gateway. Feel free to stop in; visitors are most welcome. Interested in learning more about TEI?  Consider applying for a Summer Graduate Fellowship in Humanities Computing (deadline for application: April 6).

Tell Us What You Think

Please take a few minutes to fill out the WU Libraries' service survey. Many of you participated in this survey in 2004. Based on the results, we made improvements in services, collections, and facilities. In addition to comparing our 2007 results with 2004, we will compare our results to the more than 500 North American libraries that have already participated in the survey. This enables us to benchmark best practices among large research libraries. More information about the suvey is here. The survey will be available through March 26. Thanks for participating.
