Copyright and authors rights

I've been reading and thinking about copyright lately. I'm in a small group that has begun work on copyright information pages for WU. You will probably hear more about that in coming months, because we aim to address your issues and questions! I thought these 3 gems were worth sharing this month. I hope you find them relevant and interesting.
    - Cory Doctorow's column about Creative Commons, from Locus online, Nov. 2007
    - Law professor estimates $12.4 million in liability during an average day! - Infringement nation: copyright reform and the law/norm gap [13 page pdf] by John Tehranian. (not yet published in Utah Law Review) For a quick summary see this blog post from Nate Anderson: Overly-broad copyright law has made USA a "nation of infringers

Biofolk in the news

Bob Thach and Brian Allan are quoted in The Missourian: Nov. 16, 2007 Number of tick-borne diseases doubles across Missouri

PubMed - Google Scholar comparison

Many biofolk use Google or Google Scholar first, so you may be interested in this article: Comparing test searches in PubMed and Google Scholar, by Mary Shultz, J Med Libr Assoc 2007 October; 95(4): 442-445. There's no clear recommendation, since both tools retrieved unique items. Here's a snip from the Results section:
Across all searches, Google Scholar retrieved a total of 247 citations, 125 (50.61%) of which were unique to Google Scholar. Analysis revealed the following characteristics:
  • Thirty-two items (12.96%) retrieved by Google Scholar were formats other than journal articles.
  • Some unique Google Scholar items (10 items, 4.05%) appeared in journals not indexed by PubMed.
  • Google Scholar covered a wider date range and returned 4 items (1.62%) older than 1950 that were not in PubMed.
  • Google Scholar retrieved items based on its ability to search the full text of many articles rather than solely on citation data.
PubMed retrieved a total of 147 citations across all searches, and, of these, 46 (31.29%) were unique.

Trial access to CRCnetbase through Dec. 20, 2007

We have trial access to all the CRCnetbase databases through Dec. 20th. Mostly this is CRC Press/Taylor & Francis monographs, handbooks and reference books available and searchable online. We have not decided which specific sets we might purchase beyond the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Dictionary of Natural Products, BIOSCIENCEnetBASE, NEUROSCIENCEnetBASE, and PlantSCIENCEnetBASE will probably be most interesting to biofolk. Please contact Ruth Lewis if you think some of these sets might be important additions to our collection. Thank you.
