Visit to Professor John Kelly on site at Cahokia Mounds

IMG_1320
Last Monday, I visited Professor John Kelly on site at Cahokia Mounds.  He’s teaching an undergraduate archaeology course in field techniques and field survey.   Professor Kelly explained the history of the site and exhibited some artifacts before showing me and some visiting colleagues around it.  Professor Kelly explained they had been working from amateur archaeologist Greg Perino's schematic maps from the 1950s to assist in uncovering a unique copper workshop in the Mississippian culture.   Professor Kelly has worked in the area for some 40 years and written extensively about Cahokia Mounds.

Visit Professor Kelly’s profile  on the Department of Anthropology's web page to see a selected bibliography of his writings.  If you’re interested in reading one of those articles, one way to locate it is by going to the library homepage – clicking the articles tab – and then clicking Citation Linker.

"Beneath the Silt: Combing for Clues to China’s Silk Road"

If you have yet to read the article, "Beneath the Silt: Combing for Clues to China’s Silk Road" by Judy H. Watts, featured in Washington University Magazine, follow this link: http://magazine.wustl.edu/2011/june/Pages/BeneathSiltChinasSilkRoad.aspx

T.R. Kidder is a professor of Archaeology, Environmental Studies, and is the Chair of the Department of Anthropology here at Washington University.  Kidder was invited by Liu Haiwang, PhD, senior researcher at China’s Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology in China, to participate in exploring Sanyangzhuang. Sanyangzhuang was a rural farming village submerged by the Yellow River 2000 years ago.

After reading this article, if you wold like to explore related topics check out the Anthropology Research Guide (a guide specific to Archaeology is under construction).  If you have any trouble using the guide, or have questions about finding materials in the library, do not hesitate to contact me:  j.moore@wustl.edu or (314)935-5492.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Anthropology Blog!  I am delighted to assist faculty and students in the Department of Anthropology as your new subject librarian/liaison to your department.

In this blog you can look forward to:

  • profiles of resources and faculty favorites
  • spotlight on anthropological research
  • new titles in the catalog
  • other library news related to Anthropology

About me - I earned a Masters (MLIS) from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  I hold a BA, with distinction in Anthropology, from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BFA in Fine Art from the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork City, Ireland.  As an undergraduate in anthropology, I found all of its subfields stimulating;  I particularly focused in sociocultural anthropology with an interest in linguistics.  My art degree included a great deal of video work with cross-cultural themes and exploration.

I would very much like to meet and correspond with you. I will be available throughout the summer as I develop support materials and prepare for the upcoming semester.
